Usage: Ammonia results from the metabolism of amino acids. The commonest cause of elevated blood ammonia is severe liver disease. The levels are also elevated in Reye Syndrome, Urea Cycle Enzyme deficiencies and other conditions like urinary tract abnormalities. The correlation with hepatic coma is poor.
