Usage: This test measures Pyridoxal 5’Phosphate (PLP), the most clinically significant coenzyme form of vitamin B6. PLP serves as a coenzyme for more than 100 enzymes that catalyze key steps in the metabolism of amino acids, neurotransmitters, nucleic acids, heme and lipids. Vitamin B6 deficiency is associated with microcytic anaemia, electroencephalographic abnormalities, dermatitis with cheilosis (scaling on the lips and cracks at the corners of the mouth) and glossitis (swollen tongue), depression and confusion and weakened immune function. Groups at risk of vitamin B6 deficiency are individuals with impaired renal function, autoimmune disorders, alcohol dependence and Malabsorption syndromes such as Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease & Ulcerative colitis.
